Bond Buzz, Issue #78
January 25, 2012
Free from Bond America

Welcome to another issue of the Bond Buzz!

Since many of you may be recipients of new Ultimate Sweater Machines as holiday gifts, to start out the new year, I asked Kathy to design projects that were fast to make yet simple.  These designs will also help you use up some of that yarn stash – and to try Sheep(ish) on the USM (hint: it works great).

So get those short hems ready – or one or two claw weights (Kathy only uses claw weights, but you could use either) and let’s get started...

Tips & Techniques . . .

RECONFIGURED RECTANGLES

Rectangles are the way to go for the speediest of Bond knitting – AND they also just so happen to be everywhere these days.  But I also asked Kathy to incorporate hand knitted accents because, based on our recent survey of Bond Buzz subscribers, a significant majority of you said you were interested in designs that combined hand knitted sections with machine-knitted ones and if you crochet, 76% of you would like to see projects that combine machine knitting with crochet.  This technique expands on something 41% of us already do – and that 70% of you said you’d like to do: combine machine knitting with hand knitting. A project can easily be completed in a few hours with an eye-popping hand knit section that’s added to your machine work.  The most obvious sections for hand knitted stitching would be ribbings, borders, bands, cuffs, collars, pockets, etc

So, for this issue of the Buzz, Kathy added hand-knitted sections, which are small and could certainly be replaced by machine-knitted – or crocheted – sections.  For the woman’s jacket, you could probably even do the hand-knitted section (brick stitch) on your USM, but what would be more fun for those more experienced hand knitters is to do a mosaic or other textured stitch for the band.

This month there isn’t a technique that needs to be photographed on the machine, so let’s just jump right into the first pattern, a child’s shrug with hand knitted garter cuffs with bobbles.

  • Fold rectangle in half lengthwise and make 5 (5, 6)" underarm seams on both sides.
  • Work 1R sc around opening going in every other stitch (row). Finish with 1R picot crochet.
  • Weave in ends.

Couldn't-Be-Easier Cardi

This sideways-knitted jacket is super-easy and will fit just about any body type. The very short sleeves are almost like cuffs and are very slightly shaped.  Try using up your stash by knitting in stripes (not to worry – they’ll be vertical) – or use many colors of Sheep(ish), which would result in a super-colorful, wear-everywhere piece.

Enjoy!
