Bond Buzz, Issue #24
November 2, 2005
Free from Bond America

Welcome to another issue of Bond Buzz!

Chilly weather – finally – across the country means great knitting inspiration!  Have a look at all the great knitted designs out there.  For online inspirations, my favorite Web sites for inspirational knitwear are  www.style.com, www.anthropologie.com, and the sweater section of www.newport-news.com.  These sites cover what the highest end couture designers are doing to what one of the coolest stores in the country is doing to a young but truly affordable catalog is doing.

   New, new, new!
Ultimate Style Pattern Book
HOT OFF THE PRESSES!!

We know you’ve been dying for a new pattern book – and it’s finally ready!  “Ultimate Style” has 8 designs using Caron’s fashion yarns and just arrived at Caron’s offices last week.  Click here to order.

NEW CARRIAGE
We just don’t want to stop there, though.  Here’s HOT NEW CARRIAGE NEWS too!!  Roger together with Caron has re-designed the USM carriage – just slightly, but enough to make this new version a dream to knit with!  The keyplates are SO easy to insert, but the biggest feature is re-designed “stripper plates” that give the carriage the appearance of “wings.”  Yes, it almost floats across the bed, but the most important aspect of this new design is that it is nearly impossible for the yarn to catch on the plates and thus drop your knitting. To get one of these new carriages (and very slightly modified keyplates), order second carriage kit from the Bond America online store.

   New Ribbon Yarn Technique

And now for something completely different…….

Have you ever wondered how best to knit with the new ribbon yarns?  In a recent Buzz, I showed you how to knit with Caron’s new Fabulous yarn, but this time it’s Pizazz™, the new ¾”-wide ribbon yarn.  The great thing about this yarn is the small square holes throughout.  This allows you to hang the yarn on the USM needles.  You know where I’m going with this……

Here’s the Ruff I made with just 3 looped rows.  It can be worn over a sweater or other top, but the technique can be used for so many other applications such as the top of purses, cuffs on wrist warmers, shawl collars, fancy scarves and edgings for just about anything.  You can also cut the loops for fringe, as the Pizazz is knitted right into the fabric.

Also note that the fabric will curl top to bottom even more so than it does normally.  This is okay for the Ruff, but you should consider a hem if the edge is not to curl for your project. (Fig. 1)

Here’s how:
You’ll need 1 ball of Pizazz, 1 skein (or small amount) of Caron's Simply Soft® in a coordinating color (you don’t want a contrasting color) and your 1-prong transfer tool.
1. Working from L to R, do a closed-edge CO and knit 2 rows.  COR.
2. Bring all the needles up to HP and leave the green cards behind them.

3. Measure about 2 inches on the Pizazz and insert the 1-prong through one edge hole and out the opposite edge hole (that’s slightly up or down from the insert hole on the “row” of holes). (Fig. 2)

Fig. 3

4. Insert the prong into the first needle on the left, lift up and transfer the ribbon “stitches” to the needle. (Fig. 3)

Fig. 4

5. Loop the Pizazz to the length you want and repeat inserting the 1-prong tool through the ribbon.  This time transfer the “stitches” of the ribbon onto the third needle from the end. (Fig. 4)

Fig. 5

6. Repeat Step 5 above across the row.

7. Push all stitches back against the bed. (Fig. 5)

Fig. 6

8. Put the # 2.5 keyplate in the carriage.  Remove the green cards and push the needles back to FWP.  Note that it’s possible for the Pizazz stitches on the needles to close the latches, but if you watch this and knit the row slowly, you’ll be able to keep the latches open as you knit that row.  COL. (Fig. 6)

9. Knit 1 R.  COR.

Repeat Steps 5-9 for as many rows of loop fringe you want.
