Bond Buzz, Issue #22
August 5, 2005
Free from Bond America

Welcome to another issue of Bond Buzz!

For those of you following the “New Face of Caron” (Caron’s new look in patterns, ads, reviews in magazines – and new website), you might be wondering how all this happens.  So for this issue, I’d like to share with you a few outtakes from our latest photo shoot.  It was pure luck that our photographer, Jack Deutsch, one of the best “yarn projects” photographers in the business, snapped this series of photos……

Our model, Danny, was definitely doing her job, with a great smile and attitude.  But, wait – look at that out-of-kilter wrap AND that shiny brow!

Enter James (our hair and make-up artist) and myself, both correcting and straightening at the same time.

Voila!  Perfection!

Note that this “Mega-Wrap” worn by Danny is crocheted in Simply Soft Boucle, a new Caron yarn that should be in the stores soon. The yarn is great for crocheted accents on USM-knitted projects and looks like “curly lamb.”

  Yarn Jewelry . . .

Whether you’re experiencing some of the nation’s heat wave (it was 103 in Washington, NC last week!) or the cooler temps in the Northeast (it’s blanket-time in the evenings in VT), it’s always time to think of making jewelry.

Jewelry?  Caron’s new Fabulous™ yarn is super for making “yarn jewelry” that is as eye-catching as any you’d purchase ready-made.  And with your Sweater Machine as your “third hand,” it’s super-easy to make this necklace.  (I know I used Fabulous last time too, but it’s the perfect summer yarn for all kinds of accents and summer wear.)

Fig. 1

All you need is a ball of Fabulous, 28 or 30 gauge wire (the same as you’d use for the Wyr Knittr® and available on the Bond America store) and a necklace hook (Fig. 1) – all readily available at any bead or craft store.  For tools, you’ll need just a pair of scissors and jewelry pliers.

Fig. 2

If you’d like a 16” necklace (choker length), bring forward 52 needles to HP.  For an 18” necklace, use 57 needles.  For a 20” necklace, use 64 needles.

Put the ball of Fabulous on the floor, preferably in a box, and wrap the yarn around the needles (Fig. 2) for a total of 20 wraps (or whatever you like).

Fig. 3
Cut two 12” lengths of the wire and fold each in half.  With one of the lengths of wire, insert the folded end between the wraps at one end of the necklace.

Fig. 4
Twist the wire at the end of the necklace to bring the strands of Fabulous together.  Leave the necklace on the needles.

Fig. 5

Repeat for the opposite end and remove the necklace from the needles.

Thread the wire through the loop on the end of the necklace (Fig. 5) hook and draw close to the Fabulous and wrap the excess wire between the hook and the Fabulous to secure.

Fig. 6
Repeat for opposite side.  Snip off the wire to ¼” and fold into necklace.

Fig. 7

Hook the necklace together in the back and, voila – your Fabulous Necklace is done!
